Despite concern over the recent hot, dry spell we've been experiencing, area fireworks shows are on for the Fourth of July.
After considering cancelling the fireworks show in St. Charles, officials seem satisfied that the hurricane-like storms that slammed the area on Sunday drenched us enough to squelch concerns about fire hazards from the drought. The show in St. Charles will go on as planned Wednesday at dark. Best place for viewing according to park district officials: Pottawatomie Park or Ferson Creek Park. The City of Batavia is hosting a fireworks production called "Sky Concert," that has a history spanning more than 50 years. The show is provided by the Batavia ACCESS committee and was paid for with private donations and fundraisers. No tax dollars were used for this pyrotechnics show. Dry conditions have caused a number of fires in recent weeks. The lack of rain and the upcoming Fourth of July holiday make an extremely dangerous combination.
The coming of the Fourth of July heralds, among other things, fireworks and increasingly dry conditions—a potentially dangerous combination. The dry, breezy weather conditions have prompted Geneva Fire Marshal Jerry Koster to urge extra caution this year. “The use of fireworks by individuals risks injury to the user and onlookers as well as well as posing a fire hazard for surrounding structures,” Koster said. “This year’s extremely dry conditions elevate the risk that even small sparks created by consumer fireworks can lead to grass and brush fires, which can rapidly spread—posing a risk of brush and structure fires. Park District will make announcement Monday.
Excessively dry conditions across St. Charles and the region may force the St. Charles Parks District to cancel the annual Independence Day fireworks display. The Park District, working with the St. Charles Fire Department, will make a decision Monday regarding the display, according to a park district press release. Although the fireworks display is shot off over the Fox River from Boy Scout Island, the entire area is surrounded by trees and homes. Sparks from the pyrotechnics could ignite a fire in the dry brush. According to the Natonal Weather Service there has been approximately 1inch of rainfall in the St. Charles area during the past 30 days. Forecast information indicates a 30 percent chance of rain each day for the next week. …
