Community Corner

Ryan Ahern 'Kicks It Up' at GHS

Clean out your closets. Ryan Ahern is collecting any type of shoe for charity.

Geneva High School senior Ryan Ahern has organized a service project he calls “Kicks for Care.” He is collecting shoes of any kind and will donate them to PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) and Glenwood School for Boys and Girls.

“I knew I wanted to do something to help the community,” explained Ahern.  “Being an athlete all four years at GHS, I originally thought about collecting athletic shoes for the underprivileged. Then I realized there is a greater need out there for any type of shoe and it would help more people.”

Shoes can be dropped off in large orange bins Ahern placed at the Main Office and Athletic Office of Geneva High School until Friday, March 25. , 221 W. State St., also collects shoes throughout the year and agreed to assist Ahern’s efforts.

“Ryan approached us about a month ago about his 'Kicks for Care' idea,” said Geneva Running Outfitters owner Eric Ott. “I had already started collecting shoes but hadn’t decided on a charity.  It’s nice because PADS and Glenwood School are local.”

Ahern is not only a track and cross country athlete but he helped GHS win the WYSE Team sectionals last week with Chemistry and Engineering Graphics as his areas of expertise. Ahern is looking at both St. Louis University and University of Illinois to study Aerospace Engineering.
