Markham Vineyards Presents 'The Philanthropist'

Is there a better combination than music and wine? Paul Ruby Foundation benefits from a first-rate cabernet.

The Paul Ruby Foundation for Parkinson's Research not only has its own concert but it now has its own wine.

A new Markham Vinyards wine label called "The Philanthropist" was unveiled Thursday, Aug. 26, at a wine dinner at the Herrington Inn and Spa, where Paul Ruby is the general manager.

Markham's 2007 Philanthropist is a highly rated, very limited Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will be released in October. The Paul Ruby Foundation logo and information about the mission of the foundation are displayed on the back label of the bottle.

Ruby is the Geneva resident with Parkinson's who is crusading to fund research for treatments of the disease, which affects about one in 100 Americans over the age of 60. More than 1 million, and perhaps closer to 1.5 million people in the United States have Parkinson's Disease, making it the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the country, after Alzheimer's Disease.

The Paul Ruby Foundation's Concert for a Cure takes place from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Tanna Farms, 39W808 Hughes Road in Geneva. Markham Vineyard President Brian Del Bondio will auction off the first bottle of The Philanthropist at the concert.

The wine is a beautiful thing, but it was just one part of Markham's contributions. The Paul Ruby Foundation is also the recipient of the 2009 Markham Mark of Distinction, a $25,000 grant awarded to two individuals or organizations that empower change and make a difference in their communities, according to a press release from the foundation.

More than 112,000 votes were cast in the online voting process on the Mark of Distinction Web site, and the Paul Ruby Foundation was one of two foundations receiving the greatest amount of votes.

"We thought the community here in Geneva and the surrounding areas would really rally around the idea of supporting our cause and voting for us, and sure enough, they did," said Dawn Vogelsberg, executive director of the foundation.

The wine will be available for presale for $50 at the concert. For presale information, contact Debra Metzinger at the Herrington Inn and Spa/Atwater's; 630-208-7433 or debra_metzinger@herringtoninn.com.
