You just paid for a car loan

Does your employer offer you an interest free car loan?

The Geneva taxpayers do!  The homeowners in the Geneva School District pay the salary and benefits for the superintendent of the school district.  I guess a compensation package of $250,000+ wasn’t enough.  Effective August 26, 2013, one of those benefits was a $4,300 two-year interest car loan for Dr. Kent Mutchler.  For the next 24 months, Dr. Mutchler is paying back the District $179 per month.  It gets better.  New to the contract, Dr. Mutchler receives $800.00 per month for undocumented travel within the Regional District area.  In past contracts the District (taxpayers) supplied a leased vehicle and covered all other vehicle expenses.

According to a recent newspaper article, Board President Mark Grosso claims, “The district is not in the ‘car loan’ business.  The board looked at it. The attorney wrote the agreement. It was part of his contract. It gave him an opportunity to purchase the car.”  Grosso continued, “The deal would save the district money in the long run because the district no longer would have to be responsible for its liability, upkeep and repairs.”  I guess he forgot about the $800.00 monthly payment to the superintendent.  The topper is that the board’s policy is to refuse to answer questions about the contract, or any other issues, at public school board meetings.  Basically, taxpayers are at the mercy of the school board because they provide no other option.

If you don’t think Geneva taxpayers should provide a car loan to an employee who makes a base salary of $203,750, please e-mail the board at board@geneva304.org and tell them to void the loan and demand full payment immediately.  Better yet, attend the PUBLIC school board meeting on November 11th starting at 7 pm at Williamsburg Elementary and tell them in person.  Public comment is at the very beginning of the meeting.
