Learn the Meanings of Nativity Imagery

Learn about images of the nativity and their layers of meanings with art historian, Jeff Mishur.

Around the holidays, the images that surround us promote holiday hours and doorbusters.  The Geneva History Center will host Paintings of the Nativity Story 7 p.m., December 4.  Art Historian Jeff Mishur will show imagery that deals with the Nativity and discuss and compare the images with one another to reveal the multiple layers of meanings that can be conveyed even within the same subject matter.

Various artists from different cultures and time periods will be included to provide a broad look at an important tradition in Art History.   Some artists whose work will be discussed include Botticelli, Van Eyck, Tanner, Martini, Fabriano, Campin, and van der Goes.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view our 18th Century Neapolitan Créche which was acquired by Kate Raftery, founder of The Little Traveler, during her many buying trips in Europe.  The collection is displayed in a 17th century French Provincial corner bed and has become an important part of the Christmas tradition at the Geneva History Center.

This exciting program is sponsored by The Little Traveler, the cornerstone of Geneva's unique shopping district on Third Street and original owner of the Neapolitan Creche.  Regisration is $20, $15 for GHC members, $10 for students and free to Herrington Circle members.  RSVP online at www.genevahistorycenter.org or call 630-232-4951.
