Sweet: Friday Is National Doughnut Day

Free doughnuts being handed out—and make sure to look for those "Cops on a Rooftop."

National Doughnut Day is Friday, and in honor of their big day, doughnut shops across the nation—including many in the Geneva area—will hand out free doughnuts to customers.

Just for the record, a lot of shops spell the treat "donuts," and that spelling is even used in the logo for "National Donut Day." As a staunch language traditionalist, I'm sticking with "doughnuts" throughout the story.

What's the local connection? Well, there are a few.

Dunkin' Donuts is on board with the holiday. For a free doughnut, you'll need to purchase a beverage (hot or cold), according to their "Behind the Beans" blog. You might want to do this in the morning. They say that they'll hand out one free doughnut of your choice "while supplies last." (Could Dunkin' Donuts ever really run out of doughnuts?) The nearest to Geneva probably is the one in St. Charles.

Speaking of which, hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout the state will stake out Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops to benefit Special Olympics Illinois beginning 5 a.m. Friday, June 1.

St. Charles police will stand posts at , 1711 West Main St., for the 10th annual "" event raises awareness and funds for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Illinois Torch Run Director and Sherman Police Chief Eric Smith said in a press release, ”We set records every year with the event, and we have high expectations for this year.

“The story speaks for itself,” he continued, “It’s about good and dedicated police officers working to support Special Olympics athletes and their families. And it’s about the average Joes donating change from their morning joe to help the cause.”

To meet their goal this year, Special Olympics Illinois hopes to top last year’s total of $215,000 raised at 116 Dunkin’ Donuts locations.

The national day itself, always celebrated on the first Friday of June, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Doughnut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free doughnuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.
