Plenty of Fireworks Around For A Bang-up Fourth

Despite concern over the recent hot, dry spell we've been experiencing, area fireworks shows are on for the Fourth of July.

After considering cancelling the fireworks show in St. Charles, officials seem satisfied that the hurricane-like storms that slammed the area on Sunday drenched us enough to squelch concerns about fire hazards from the drought. The show in St. Charles will go on as planned Wednesday at dark. Best place for viewing according to park district officials: Pottawatomie Park or Ferson Creek Park.

The City of Batavia is hosting a fireworks production called "Sky Concert," that has a history spanning more than 50 years. The show is provided by the Batavia ACCESS committee and was paid for with private donations and fundraisers. No tax dollars were used for this pyrotechnics show.

They'll be launched from Mooseheart Field, so your best viewing is from Engstrom Park, the corner of Millview Drive and West Main Street. There's overflow audience space across the street at Batavia High School on the athletic fields on West Main. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. and there'll be entertainment and food starting at 5 p.m.

And the Kane County Cougars, always up for a good fireworks display, will do a special bang-up job with this extended production synchronized to patriotic music. The show starts around 9:30 p.m. following the game with the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Bring some chairs, some snacks, don't forget to hydrate (frozen water bottles are great because as they melt, the water is ice cold), find a spot and safely enjoy another birthday for America.
