UPDATE: Expect Road, Bridge Closures in Geneva and St. Charles for Fox Valley Marathon

Prairie Street and Illinois Street bridges will be closed from 7 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Other streets to be affected, too—in Geneva and St. Charles.

St. Charles and Geneva police are reminding motorists that the Fox Valley Marathon will be under way Sunday, Sept. 16, and will affect several roadways.

The third annual Fox Valley Marathon starts at 7 a.m. at St. Charles along South 1st Street and the Illinois Street bridge, heading south to Aurora returning to the finish line back in St. Charles on the Illinois Street bridge until about 1:30 p.m.

The first part of the marathon will travel south on 1st Street until it meets up with South 2nd Street (Route 31), when the runners and motoring traffic will split the road in half, according to St. Charles police. Officers directing traffic will move one lane of traffic at a time until the final runner has passed south on Route 31 into Geneva.

About an hour after the run begins, officers and emergency personnel will be in place along Riverside Ave (Route 25) to assist with traffic direction for the return phase of the run, the St. Charles Police Department said. Several east-side roadways along the river will be detoured or divided due to the run.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra time and patience when commuting throughout the city. Vehicles that need to cross the Fox River will need to use the Main Street bridge or Geneva’s State Street bridge. Both the Prairie Street and Illinois Street bridges will be closed during the entire event. Police remind drivers to watch for runners, spectators and emergency responders assisting with the event.

In Geneva, the runners will travel south on Route 31, east on Stevens Street to River Lane, south across State Street, and continue south, through the Kane County Government Center property. The runners will then exit the government center and travel south on Route 31 to the Fabyan Forest Preserve. They will run in the northbound curb lane.

The roadways that will be closed during this event are Route 31, from Stevens Street in Geneva to Roosevelt in St. Charles, River lane, from Stevens Street to South Street, State Street, between Illinois 25 and Illinois 31, and one northbound lane of Route 31, from Third Street to the Fabyan Forest Preserve. The roadways should be completely open for traffic at approximately 8:30 a.m.

"Please use caution when traveling through the area on Sunday morning. There will be numerous runners and spectators in the area," the Geneva Police Department said in a community e-blast.

In addition, the CASA Kane County Fox Valley Kids Marathon will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday Sept. 15. South 1st Street between Illinois Street and Indiana Street will be closed for that event, the police department said. The Prairie Street bridge will be temporarily closed at the start of that event, but the closure is expected to be less than 30 minutes.
