Vikings Volleyball Team Upset by Batavia

Geneva's volleyball team could not fight off the Bulldogs tonight and find themselves in an unusual position—off to a 1-3 start in the UEC River Division.

The classic cross-town rivalry met tonight as the Vikings and Bulldogs volleyball teams faced each other at Batavia for a UEC conference match. Batavia defeated the lady Vikings in a close three-set match, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19.

The Vikings are now 15-6 with a 1-3 conference record after tonight's loss.

After Geneva fell 0-6 in the first set, they girls came back on a long streak and won 25-22. However, they could not keep their momentum and Batavia went on to relatively easy wins in the final two games.

Geneva's Riley Sullivan had 11 kills, six blocks, six points, and 14 digs. Brooke Morphis led the team with 12 assists, and had four blocks, 10 digs, and three points. Another player to step up in tonight's match was Melissa Hankia, with 4 kills and 1 block.

Assistant coach Jaime Spolum  was disappointed with the loss but saw some good things from her Viking team. "Hankia played a great game. She came out swinging aggressively, and we love to see that," Spolum said.

The Vikings volleyball team plays next at 6 p.m. Wednesday at home against Kaneland High School.
