Vikings' Competitive Dance Team Off to Great Start at Fremd

Dance team tallies a first- and third-place finish in the IHSA Class 2A competition. Neuqua Valley up next.

The Geneva High School Varsity Dance Team took both first and third place in the 2A Division on Nov. 23 at the IHSA Competitive Dance Competition at Fremd High School.

Geneva competes next on Dec. 10 at Neuqua Valley High School.

The Geneva varsity dance team is coached by Amy VanWagenen and has 18 members consisting of eight seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and one freshman. Dance team captains are Amie Dappas, Hailey Wishne, Danielle Friedel and Kelsey Paeth. Co-captains are Danielle Friedel and Mindy Lietza.

The Illinois High School Association added competitive dance to its sports lineup for the first time in the 2012-2013 season. Last year, there were 241 teams that competed in Illinois High School Association events, and 207 competed in sectionals and 91 made it to the finals in Bloomington.

Teams perform to a routine that can be 1 minute, 45 seconds to 3 minutes with dance styles such as pom, kick, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop and combinations of styles. There are three classes based on school size.

The IHSA sectionals are slated for Saturday, Jan. 25, and the state finals are Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, at U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Bloomington.
