VIKING POSTGAME INTERVIEW: Matt Williams Showing Leadership, Guts and a Little of That QB Swagger

Geneva's quarterback might have had his best game yet in Friday's win over Wheaton North.

Matt Williams has come a long way.

On Friday night, Geneva's quarterback might have had his best game so far in a stellar high school career. He threw for 210 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown, and ran for 59 yards and another touchdown.

He repeatedly made big plays and very good, split-second decisions, eluded tacklers and turned at least two possible sacks into positive yards.

He's a bit of a gunslinger—a little like his coach, Rob Wicinski—but he's showing maturity along with his playmaking in what appears to be an excellent Viking offense.

One of his best efforts Friday might not show up in some game descriptions or highlight films, but it was huge. It was early in the fourth quarter, and Geneva was facing second-and-13 at the Geneva 43.

It looked as if Williams was about to get sacked. He alluded one tackler, then another, changed directions, got around the corner and rammed into a tackler for a 12-yard gain. That was the play that set up  to the 7-yard line.

It is fitting that Williams ran it in from the 7, giving Geneva a 33-24 cushion—and the game—against an excellent Wheaton North team.

It's not in this video, but Williams also has a little bit of Joe Namath in him.

"Wheaton North is a great team," I said in the postgame interview, thinking I'd get the usual kind accolades for a worthy opponent.

"Yes," the gunslinger said. "And we're a better team."

On Friday night, they certainly were.
