St. Charles North Upsets Geneva Girls 59-57

The girls basketball team falls to St. Charles North, the first time in four years Geneva has had back-to-back losses.

Geneva Vikings' fans who have been following the girls basketball team over the past few seasons may be surprised by the uncharacteristic start to the 2010-11 season. The lady Vikings are facing something they have not faced in more than four years—a two-game losing streak.

Although tonight's game against St. Charles North was a close one, the Vikings fell to the North Stars 59-57 and are now looking at a 3-2 record on their still very early season.

The first few minutes of the game proved to be a Jekyll/Hyde type of beginning, as the Vikings took an early 6-0 lead but also had three team fouls in the first minute and a half.

At the end of the first quarter the Vikings led the North Stars 17-13, but they already had put up eight fouls against St. Charles North.

"We have to respond a little more aggressively on defense and be smart," coach Tim Pease advised his players before the second quarter. "We need to score, stop, score."

After the North Stars took their first lead of the game four minutes into the third quarter, Geneva struggled to come back.

It was a nailbiter all the way up to the end, and with seven seconds left, Geneva had an opportunity to tie the game 59-59, but the last shot fell short and the North Stars came away with the win.

Kat Yelle had 24 points and Ashley Santos 17 in the effort.

The Vikings will attempt to regain their momentum with the cross-town rivalry and UEC game against Batavia on Thursday at Batavia High School.

Geneva's sophomore team was able to take home a victory over St. Charles North tonight with a 37-31 win.

Coach Meadows was happy with the performance.

"We rebounded very well," said Meadows. "Kelly Gordon did a great job of defending a difficult player, and Kelly Sharpe played big off the bench with a couple of key shots. We need to be more disciplined on offense and be smarter with the clock, but we are only five games in. It will come."

The sophomore team will also play Batavia on Thursday for a UEC River Division matchup.
