St. Charles North Tennis Team Defeats Geneva 6-2

North Stars' No. 1 singles player Liselot Koenen returns from her hometown in Holland in time to play Geneva's Carly Ausman and shows why she's considered one of the area's best.

In a tough interdivisional conference match Tuesday at St. Charles North High School, the North Stars varsity tennis team defeated the Geneva Vikings 6-2.

St. Charles North came away with three wins in the singles round and three wins in the doubles round.

Four-year varsity No. 1 singles player Liselot Koenen from St. Charles North defeated Geneva's new No. 1 singles player Carly Ausman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

"It was a fun match. She's really good, so the score wasn't a surprise,"Ausmen said about Koenen. "I knew I had to come prepared. We played them in sectionals and they've always been very good."

Koenen was out of the country visiting her hometown in Holland recently and missed a few matches, including a match against another conference rival, Batavia.

"It was a great day to play tennis, and it's great to be back," she said. "A win against Geneva is always nice."

No. 2 singles player Annie Tourte was the only Viking to take a victory in the singles round. She defeated Kaity Wolfe 6-1, 6-0. The Vikings' third-singles player, Sarah Kappele, took her match to three sets but went down 6-0 in her last set.

Geneva head coach Maureen Weiler was pleased with Tourte's win. "We had a very strong performance from our No. 2 singles player," she said.

Geneva's No. 1 doubles team Claire Chlasta and Stephanie Sharpe were defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Ashley Randazzo and Faith Oehlerking. Geneva's No. 2 doubles players, Stephanie Micheals and Kirby Arloff, were defeated in three sets by North's Abby Roggeman and Kate Lesswing.

The Vikings play next at 4:30 on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Geneva High School against Elgin.

St. Charles North play next at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Barrington High School.
