Sophs Take Care of Business in Elgin

A no-nonsense Viking offense scored four running touchdowns in the first half and ran away (sorry for the pun) with an easy win against the Maroons.

The Vikings scored four times in the first half—OK Dan Berendt scored four times in the first half—and the Vikings ran away with a 41-20 victory Friday in Elgin.

Coach Reed Allison gave his team a talking to after last week's loss to St. Charles East at home.

"It stuck a little bit," he said. "We were down 6-0 right off the bat tonight, so it was nice to see the guys respond to that."

Berendt scored on runs of 5, 10, 11 and 27 yards in the first half, when the Vikings led 28-6.

Dan Reed intercepted a pass and ran it 65 yards for a touchdown to start the third quarter, and Berendt got a well-deserved breather. Luke Cella followed with a 24-yard touchdown run with 5:18 in the third.

Geneva's defense played well, limiting the Maroons to 20 points, some of it coming without the starters in the lineup.

"My philosophy when up that much is to run the ball and be good sports, but we still want those guys playing hard," Allison said.

How does it feel to be 3-1 at this point in the season?

"Three-and-one feels a lot better than 2-2," Allison said.

Dan Berendt had eight carries, 70 yards and four TDs, Travis Camper nine carris for 46 yards, Luke Cella four carries for 38 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings had 237 yards total offense.

Next week: the Vikings play St. Charles North at Homecoming.
