Second Quarter Sinks Vikings Vs. Wheaton North
The Vikings fall to 1-1 on the season. Batavia is next.
A 24-7 second quarter lifted the Wheaton North Falcons to a non-conference win Friday night over the Geneva Vikings at Burgess Field.
Geneva outscored Wheaton North 14-9 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to offset the Falcons' high-flying second-quarter scoring binge, and Geneva fell by a final score of 40-27.
The Vikings drop to 1-1 on the season, after beating Oswego last week 29-27 at the Panthers' Ken Pickerill Stadium. Wheaton North moves to 2-0.
Wheaton North drew first blood, scoring on a pass play with about 9 minutes still showing on the first-quarter clock. The Vikings came back, scoring a rushing touchdown with about two minutes left in the first quarter. Geneva missed the extra-point attempt and trailed 7-6 after the first period.
With about nine minutes to go in the second period, the Falcons kicked a field goal to take a 10-6 lead, according to MaxPrep's QuixScore game log.
Wheaton North scored another touchdown pass with about five minutes left in the second quarter to make it 17-6, then scored a "defensive touchdown" a minute later to pull away 24-6.
The Vikings scored a touchdown pass to trim the lead to 24-13, but a minute later, the Falcons scored on a pass play of their own to take a 31-13 lead into the half.
The Vikings scored on a rushing TD to get within striking distance, 31-20. Wheaton North added a field goal with five minutes left in the third quarter for a 34-20 lead. The Falcons scored again, this time on a running play, with under a minute to widen the margin to 40-20.
Geneva added a touchdown pass with eight minutes left in the game to make it 40-27, but Wheaton North held on from there.
Geneva faces Upstate Eight rival Batavia next week. The Bulldogs lost to Richards 31-13 Friday night.
