Santacaterinas All Over the Sports Headlines This Week

Jackie, Michael and Dan and playing for the Chicago Red Stars, NIU and the Geneva Vikings, in that order.

Geneva's Santacaterina family was in headlines all over the place this week.

Jackie Santacaterina was voted NWSL Fans’ Choice MVP for Week 18 for her performance against Sky Blue FC.

Scott Lewis reports that Jackie "became the first defender in NWSL history to score two goals and record an assist in a single match and NWSL fans rewarded her accomplishment by voting her this week’s NWSL Fans’ Choice MVP."

Meanwhile, Geneva quarterback Dan Santacaterina was featured in a Daily Herald preseason story on the back page of Thursday's sports section. Dave Oberhelman has a terrific story about Dan's "bionic clavicle," which was shattered in Game 3 against Batavia last year after a clean hit by Marquise Jenkins.

Dan had surgery that includes a "6-inch titanium plate secured by nine screws" supporting the collarbone, which Oberhelman describes as "airport security tested and approved."

"You can actually see a couple of the heads of the nails poking out a little bit," Santacaterina told him.

Meanwhile, at Northern Illinois University, Michael Santacaterina is among a fleet of outstanding linebackers.

An excellent article on the NIU website talks about Michael and the linebackers who will play for the Huskies in a quest to return to a BCS game, as they did a year ago.

Michael appeared as a middle linebacker last season, made 28 tackles "and proved himself a valued commodity in coverage situations as he recorded an interception, three pass breakups and deflected four passes," the article says.
