Revenge of the Co-Op or Just Star Wars? Geneva to Host Gymnastics Regional Feb. 4

Vikings will have an opportunity to battle St. Charles co-op for the fifth time this year. The winning team receives an automatic bid to the Lake Park sectional.

The IHSA released its regional assignments on Tuesday and Geneva will be hosting for the second straight year.

Glenbard South, Leyden and St. Charles co-op will visit Mack Olson Gym on Friday, Feb. 4.

Judging by the scores the four teams have posted throughout the season, Geneva and St. Charles will be expected to battle for the championship and an automatic bid to advance to sectional play. Last year Geneva nearly upset Neuqua Valley during the Geneva Regional.  The Wildcats edged the Vikings 140.425 to 139.125 even though the Vikings recorded a school-record score.

The opportunity for the two neighboring schools to go head-to-head certainly sets up to be rather intriguing as it’ll be the fifth time the teams will face each other this season. Geneva outperformed St. Charles in the Illinois Best Invite on Dec. 18, but that was a special format invite where only one all-arounder and one individual competed per event.

St. Charles spoiled Senior Night at Geneva on Jan. 5, winning 135.35 to 134.40 but Geneva avenged that loss one week later, blasting past St. Charles 138.75 to 136.775 during a quadrangular at Neuqua Valley.

The two teams will finish their regular season on Jan. 29 in the Upstate Eight Conference Meet. The teams head into the Meet in a  three-way tie with Waubonsie Valley/Metea Valley co-op for first place.

Geneva competed in its final Invite of the year last Saturday in the Viking Invitational at Niles North. In the adjusted format meet where only three competitors’ scores per event were counted, the Vikings placed third out of 14 teams with a 101.10. Palatine took home top honors with a 106.25 and New Trier was runner-up with a 104.725.

The Vikings will travel to Oswego for a triangular on Monday, Jan. 24 as a final preparation for the UEC Meet.
