On the Web: Wicinski Set to Transfer From NIU

Geneva's very own Lauren Wicinski and four other volleyball players from Northern Illinois University file release requests, according to a story in the Daily Chronicle of DeKalb.

The DeKalb Chronicle is reporting that Geneva's Lauren Wicinski and three other volleyball players at Northern Illinois University have decided to transfer from NIU to another, unnamed college or colleges.

The report says Wicinski and fellow sophomores Jessica Lubic, Haley Norris and Cheyenne Dawson, filed requests to be released from NIU. Lubic is a Kaneland graduate.

Wincinski is the two-time Mid-American Conference player of the year. She recently had spend a weekend in Colorado Springs in open tryouts for the U.S. Women's National Team, U.S. Women's National A2 Program and U.S. Women's Junior National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

According to a story on the NIU website, Wicinski's tryout "was a resounding success."

"I heard a number of comments from other court coaches and college coaches out there on how good of an all-around player she was," said NIU Assistant Coach Dan Pawlikowski, who accompanied Wicinski on the trip.

The Chronicle article did not say where Wicinski might transfer. Wicinski and her dad, Geneva football coach Rob Wicinski, were unavailable for comment.

Northern Illinois volleyball coach Ray Gooden told the Chronicle that he didn't see the transfers coming, although he was always worried because of the national attention and acclaim Wicinski and the NIU volleyball program have received. He wished the four athletes well.

In her first two years at NIU, Wicinski led the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament, twice led the Huskies to the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship match, and was twice named an AVCA All-American and MAC Player of the Year, according to the NIU website.

The Chronicle article said that, last season, Wicinski led the nation with 5.34 kills per set. Her 6.18 points per set also led the country, while her .57 aces per set were third-best nationally.
