Luchtenburg Shoots 39, But Girls Golf Team Can't Rein in Mustangs

Abby Luchtenburg has another impressive day, but the Geneva girls golf team falls short at home against Metea Valley.

With an Upstate Eight Conference match just around the corner, a young Geneva's girls golf team is fighting to build momentum.

In Monday's match against UEC Valley Division inter-division foe Matea Valley at Mill Creek, Abby Luchtenburg earned medalist honors with a 39, but it wasn't enough to ensure a Viking team victory.

Geneva's varsity shot 193, well behind Metea Valley's 170. The top four scores from each team combine for the overall score.

The Vikings have a difficult schedule ahead of them, with St. Charles East coming up in their next match and the conference tournament coming up at the end of the month. Head coach Eric Hatczel recognizes the Saints as a team to beat.

"They have an excellent program, a great set of girls, and lots of depth," he said.

The junior varsity team also lost to Matea Valley on Monday.

Katie Kelly shot 53 to lead the JV team, followed by Lauren Shutz (55), Rachel Geneser (64), and Kelsey Jafer (68).

Both the varsity and JV teams play Tuesday at the St. Charles East Country Club against St. Charles East, Larkin, and Elgin High School.
