Gymnastics UPDATE: It's All on the Floor for Ott and Puff

Emily Ott and Ashley Puff fall short of advancing to state as all-arounders. Both gymnasts, as well as freshman Claire Scatterday, miss qualifying as at-larges on beam.

The official girls gymnastics state meet cuts were determined after Thursday’s Niles North sectional concluded.

Geneva’s Emily Ott and Ashley Puff had already punched their ticket to Palatine by finishing in first and second place respectively on floor during Tuesday’s Lake Park sectional.

While there had been some hope that they could advance in the all-around or on beam, both came up short.

The cutoff score for all-around was 36.375. Puff scored a 35.650 and Ott had a 35.450 on Tuesday night.

Ott (8.9) and Puff (8.925) also won’t compete on beam at state, nor will Claire Scatterday. The freshman came heartbreakingly close, scoring a 9.1 at Lake Park while the cutoff at-large score was 9.125. Fortunately for Scatterday, she has three more years of eligibility to try to advance to state.

The state final preliminaries will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18 at Palatine High School. If Ott or Puff is able to post one of the 10 best scores on floor, they will advance to the final session at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.

As a senior, Ott will be competing for the last time. Last February she competed at state on beam and floor. She scored a 9.2 on beam, just missing a chance to advance to the final session, and had a 9.325 on floor, tying for 13th place.

As a sophomore and newcomer to the team this season, Puff will be making her debut in the state finals.
