Gina Nolan Steps Down as Head Girls' Basketball Coach at GHS

Veteran coach turns focus to recovery from cancer.

Monday marked the end of an exceptional chapter in the history of Geneva High School girls’ basketball, as head coach Gina Nolan announced she is stepping down to focus on her recovery from cancer.

Nolan joined the coaching staff in 2002 and assumed the lead position for the 2004-2005 season. Under her direction, the program averaged almost 25 wins a year, and only put double digits in the loss column once.

Without question, the program’s best mark came in 2009-10, when the Vikings compiled a perfect 32-0 regular-season record. In fact, Geneva captured three straight sectional championships from 2009-2011. The Lady Vikings' 2009 sectional title was a first in program history, as was their appearance at the state tournament for the super-sectional.

Following her diagnosis in June 2010, Nolan missed the first half of the 2010-2011 season, passing the reins to assistant coach Tim Pease. Her upperclassmen kept it business as usual, though, going 11-3 in her absence. Upon her return in early January, the Vikings charged to the top of the Upstate Eight River Division standings, winning 10 of 13 regular season contests and closing out with a six-game win streak. And they didn’t just win; they dominated, beating opponents by 20 points or more almost every night.

Nolan finishes her coaching career with a remarkable record of 173-38. She will continue to teach Spanish at GHS.
