GHS Sports Roundup: Walk-Off Win for Softball Team, Winning Week for Vikings Baseball, Soccer

Viking athletics puts together winning week despite weather woes.

Another wet week for the Midwest led to limited action for all GHS sports last week. Here’s a recap of what did take place:

Baseball: Varsity Takes a Double-Header, Sophs Keep Winning

The varsity’s week began on Thursday against St. Viator, and what a start it was. Deadlocked at 0-0 through eight innings, the Lions finally broke through with a four-run ninth, and the Vikings were unable to respond.

Geneva was able to bounce back on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader of Larkin by scores of 7-3 in game one and 9-2 in game two. Pitching was the story of the day, as Jordan Touro went the distance in the opener, giving up just seven hits to pick up the win. Senior Mike Monaghan was even better in the nightcap, giving up two runs on three hits over six innings for the “W.” Offensively, Brett Willman had a monster day with a solo homer and a grand slam in game one.

The sophomore team played Thursday against St. Viator and squeaked out a 3-2 win. Bryce Rentschler, Brock Chenier and Luke Polishak all had RBIs for the Vikings. Andy Honiotes pitched six strong innings for the win, surrendering an earned run on two hits while striking out 10.

Walk-Off Win for Softball Team

The varsity squad played a hard-fought contest against St. Charles East on Thursday, with both teams scoreless at the end of regulation. No one was able to do anything until the 10th, when Elena Wright finally broke through with an RBI single, giving the Vikings a 1-0, walk-off win in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play. The victory moved Geneva to 8-4 overall and 4-2 against the UEC.

Allon and Lulek Heroes as Girls’ Soccer Team Upsets St. Charles North

Varsity girls’ soccer was one of the lucky ones last week, as they got in three games between downpours.

The Lady Vikings started the week with a 2-1, shootout loss to Lake Zurich in the opening round of the Mairin Wallner Memorial Tournament on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Vikings looked overmatched against St. Charles North, trailing 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play. But Catherine Allon knotted the score off a corner kick by teammate Caitrin Griffin. Then with roughly two minutes to go, sophomore Amanda Lulek put one right through North Stars goalkeeper Kendall Karr to give the home team a win.

Allon and Lulek were the heroes again on Saturday as they both had goals in Geneva’s 2-1 triumph over Rockford Boylan. By the end of the week, the Vikings had improved their overall record to 7-3-4.
