GHS Sophomore Baseball Flying High After Impressive Spring Break

Vikings win three, improve to 4-0 in big week

Pure and simple domination on both sides of the ball seems to be the motto for Geneva’s sophomore baseball team in 2011, and they used that strategy to perfection in back-to-back-to-back wins this week, improving to 4-0 on the season.

A Tuesday home game against Marmion provided the toughest test to date, and the Vikings still walked away with an 8-2 win. They put a "7" on the board in the second inning, and that put the game well out of reach for the visiting Cadets. Danny Berendt had two of Geneva’s six hits, and he and Mitch Endriukaitis drove in two runs apiece.

Tony Landi got it done on the mound, giving up two hits and an earned run while striking out 10. Berendt threw two scoreless innings in relief.

If they looked good on Tuesday, the Vikings were even more impressive on Wednesday as they took down the Eagles of Aurora Christian 19-0 in a mercy rule-shortened victory. Again, scoring in bunches was the theme, as Geneva put up four, four, nine, and two run clumps during a 14-hit attack. Berendt and Bryce Rentschler had three base knocks each to lead the charge, while Berendt, Bobby Hess and Brock Chenier each had three RBIs.

Andy Honiotes got the win with four strong innings, giving up five hits but no runs and striking out nine. Connor Feeney handled mop-up duty admirably, giving up two hits and recording a strikeout in the last frame.

The hits kept coming Friday, and the result was a 14-3, six-inning rout of St. Francis. Andy Honiotes was the big bat for the Vikings, smacking a pair of home runs and driving in five runs. Berendt and Anthony Bragg chipped in two runs each.

Brock Chenier was awarded the win for his four scoreless innings. Geneva has now outscored its opponents 51-5 in its first four contests.
