Geneva's 2008 Cross Country Team Ranked Best-Ever in State of Illinois

Geneva girls finish 18th in 20-team St. Charles East/Leavey Invitational.

On the girls’ side, the highlight for the Vikings came prior to Saturday’s St. Charles East/Leavey Invitational at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.

“We just found out that dyestat.com just published their list of top 25 all-time teams and they ranked our girls (2008) as the best team ever in the history of Illinois state cross country,” said Thomson. “That’s the good news but they’re gone now.”

Geneva placed 18th in the 20-team meet Saturday (427 points), as sophomore Kathryn Adelman led the way with a 25th-place time of 18:57.1 over the 3-mile course.

“It was pretty hot,” said Adelman, who wore an ice pack on her right shoulder after the race. “The shady areas were pretty nice but once you got in the sun, it was tough. I think I finished strong. I was tired but I just tried to do my best.”

“She was hurt almost two-thirds of the season last year,” Thomson said of Adelman. “She just missed being on our state team last year by five seconds or so. Unfortunately, we just ran out of meets for her.

“Today, she blew her previous best time away,” Thomson added. “She was in the 18s today so that’s good.”

Sophomores Sydney Geils (94th, 21:03.1), Ana Samples (97th, 21:12.4), Katie Anderson (105th, 21:36.7), and Becky Geneser (106th, 21:37.3) rounded out the scoring quintet.

On the frosh-soph side, the Vikings placed third in the team standings behind freshman Kylie Monahan (6th, 19:50), Courtney Reynolds (21st, 20:22.9), Maria Leone (22nd, 20:23.7), Sydney Smith (27th, 20:32.8), and Jill MacDonald (39th, 20:56.5).
