Geneva Varsity Baseball Win Streak Reaches Four

Viking offense responds under pressure to improve team to 4-1

After dropping their season opener to Marmion, Geneva's varsity baseball team seems to have righted the ship. The Vikings picked up a trio of victories this week, extending their streak to four games and improving to 4-1 overall on the young season.

Saturday saw the Vikings get off to a fast start, scoring three times in the first two innings. A four-run fourth sealed the deal for the visitors as they toppled West Aurora 7-4. John Swiderski led the offense with a pair of doubles and Brad Bernhard had one as part of Geneva’s 10 hits. Marcus Stierwalt picked up his first win of the 2011 campaign, while Kyle Bender earned the save.

Waubonsie Valley was the next victim, falling 8-6 on Tuesday. It was a nail-biter for Viking fans, as Geneva trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the last inning. Making matters worse, they had to fight themselves for most of the game with six errors. Once again, though, the big inning came into play as the Vikings scored six times to close it out. Geneva had 10 hits in all, including two homers from Matt Williams and one each from Chris Hipchen and John Swiderski. The win went to Jeff Konrad.

A road contest against Bartlett ended the week on Thursday, with Geneva prevailing 6-4. Continuing the theme, the Vikings were down 4-0 in the fourth inning, but put a crooked six on the board to come out on top. Jordan Touro improved to 1-1 and Matt Williams notched the save opportunity.

Geneva has five contests scheduled for this week, highlighted by a home meeting with undefeated Neuqua Valley.
