Geneva Soph Baseball Team Win Streak Up to Eight Games

Vikings edge West Aurora, then go on a tear against Waubonsie Valley and Bartlett.

Geneva High School's sophomore baseball team continued its winning ways this week, picking up four more victories to stretch the team's season-opening streak to eight games.

The week started with the Vikings gutting out a 3-2 victory over West Aurora in game one of a twin bill on Saturday. Geneva actually played from behind for the first time this year, trailing 1-0 in their half of the second inning. The deficit didn’t last long though, thanks to RBIs from Andy Honiotes and Luke Polishak, putting the Vikings up 2-1 by the end of the inning.

The Blackhawks tied it up in the sixth but fell victim to a two-out miscue in the bottom of the inning, allowing Honiotes to score the game-winner. Mitch Endriukaitis got the win for the Vikings after throwing six innings of four-hit ball and only giving up one earned run.

Game two was much less suspenseful, as the Vikings cruised to an 11-1 victory. It wasn’t a slugfest, though; the Blackhawks committed nine errors in the game. Jake Weede drove in a trio of runs for GHS, and Jeremy Hanson had two more. The win went to Anthony Bragg, who gave up just two hits and no runs over two innings.

From there, the Vikings set the offense on cruise control, winning both of their remaining games by double digits. Facing Waubonsie Valley on Tuesday, the Warriors never knew what hit them as Geneva rolled out a 16-hit barrage en route to a 14-3 laugher. Anthony Bragg led the charge with three base knocks and two runs driven in. On the mound, Andy Honiotes was almost untouchable over his five innings, surrendering just one hit and one run while striking out 11 Warriors.

Bartlett fared no better on Thursday, falling victim to a 13-hit onslaught and falling to Geneva 10-0. Everyone chipped in, as Bragg, Honiotes, Polishak and Danny Berendt each had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Tony Landi went the distance, giving up no runs and just two hits over all six innings of the mercy-rule shortened game.

The sophomores will face their toughest test of the season next week as they are scheduled to play six games in five days. They’ll start the week at home against South Elgin on Monday.
