Vikings Get Ninth Seed in 7A, Play Lake Zurich on Saturday

The Tribune says the first-round game between Geneva and No. 8 seed Lake Zurich will be one of the best first-round matchups.

It would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall when the Geneva Vikings football team got together Saturday night to watch the Illinois High School Association playoff-seedings show.

Was there a massive groan or cheers when Geneva matched up with Lake Zurich in the first round of Class 7A competition?

The Vikings are seeded ninth, the Bears eighth. The game is at Lake Zurich, and will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. The campus is at 300 Church St. in Lake Zurich. Here's a map to the game.

Had the IHSA flipped the seeding (Geneva eighth, Lake Zurich ninth), Geneva would have had the home field, and probably a Friday night contest, as well.

If you go to the Lake Zurich football website, you'll find out just how tough a game this will be for the Vikings. The Bears were state champions in 2007, runners up in 2006, and they've qualified for the playoffs every years since 2002.

Geneva plays its best in the friendly confines of , so travelling to face a 7-2 foe on Saturday is about as enticing as the Walking Burrito they were pushing at the South Elgin concession stand. Apparently, that two weeks ago was enough to blow away Geneva's homefield advantage in the first round, after all.

The two top seeds in each bracket of 7A are Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East. Back-to-back state champion Wheaton Warrenville South has had a down year and a 6-3 record—and has the eighth seed in its bracket.

with a first seed in Class 6A. The 9-0 Bulldogs host 5-4 Notre Dame in Round 1. The way Batavia is playing so far this year, the Bulldogs might as well be taking on the collegiate version of the Fighting Irish.

Maybe, if we're lucky, Geneva/Lake Zurich might be in the running again for the of the Week?
