Defense Helps Geneva Take Regional Title Home; Lady Vikings Advance to Jacobs Sectional

The girls basketball team took the regional title from St. Charles North after defeating them 57-31.

The Geneva girls basketball program is used to winning, which may be why no one seemed too surprised when they defeated St. Charles North for the regional title on Thursday night at St. Charles East.

The lady Vikings went in to the Class 4A St. Charles East Regional as the heavy favorite and lived up to the hype after beating both St. Charles teams by a combined 63 points in regional play.

Although in their first match of the season, the Vikings came back to win in the second conference match-up and to eventually take the conference title. On Thursday night, when both teams’ seasons were on the line, the Vikings showed up to play and defeated the North Stars 57-31.

After St. Charles North scored only 20 points in the first half, Geneva limited the North Stars to only 11 points in the entire second half.

“Our half court defense got the job done tonight,” said assistant coach Eric Duffett. “We really dug deep and battled adversity when things weren’t going our way.”

Now, with a win over St. Charles North on Thursday night and yet another regional championship, the lady Vikings basketball team is on the brink of a three-peat.

It’s no secret that the girls basketball program has had highly successful seasons over the past few years (32-2 in 2009 and 31-1 in 2010).  The last two years the Vikings have not only been conference and regional champions but have also taken home the sectional championship.

Geneva advances to the sectional tournament and plays next at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Jacobs High School.
