St. Charles North's Blistering 147 Team Score Tops Viking Golf Team at Mill Creek

The North Stars out shoot Geneva by 10 strokes on the road.

The boys golf team took second Wednesday in its home match against St. Charles North and Streamwood. The Vikings came in at 157—10 strokes off the pace set by St. Charles North (147) but well ahead of Streamwood (184).

"It was a very disappointing loss for us," coach Bill Koehn said. "We played in a big tournament on Tuesday and won the Elgin Country Club invitational—that was in a windstorm—and then we come here on an absolutely gorgeous evening to play golf and we play rotten."

Actually, Geneva played well enough to win most matches. Viking senior captain Jeff Lapetina shot 38 at Mill Creek. Colin Lillibridge shot 39, and Andrew Cisco and Matt Landry both shot 40.

St. Charles North's Nate Clark led all scorers with a blistering 34, followed by Steve Gow's 37 and Dan Shephard's 38.

St. Charles North lost to St. Charles East by one stroke earlier this season and is among the best in the Upstate Eight. Last night's match was an interdivisional conference match.

"I can't take anything away from the St. Charles North team," Koehn said. "They played excellently—it was a very impressive round of golf to shoot 147. But we have to take care of business on our home course, and we just couldn't get the job done."

So far, Geneva has lost to two conference teams by 10 strokes or less. On Aug. 31, Batavia beat Geneva by six strokes.

"We just need to play consistent golf at all conference matches," Koehn said. "We have a lot of depth on this team, and if we can continue to play better than our average we should win most of our matches."

The boys golf team plays next at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Mill Creek Golf Course.
