Baseball Team Ties Single-Game Home Run Record—Against Batavia

Varsity Vikings make history while sophomores come from behind against Batavia.

GHS varsity baseball made history in its 9-7 victory over Batavia on Tuesday, pounding out six home runs and tying a school record. Matt Williams was the star for the day with three longballs. Brett Willman had two and Chris Hipchen added a solo shot.

The day didn’t start out promisingly, as the Vikings found themselves at a 4-2 disadvantage entering the fifth inning. That was when the fireworks started as the Vikings put together a three-run frame and followed it up with four more in the next inning.

The Bulldogs tried to get back in it, scoring three times in the top of the seventh before Williams slammed the door, earning the save. He backed a strong start from sophomore Jordan Touro, who gave up four runs (none earned) on five hits over six innings to get the win. He struck out six and walked just two while improving to 4-1.

Sophomores

The sophomores didn’t have an easy time against the Bulldogs either. An early 2-0 lead off a Danny Berendt homer disappeared quickly and became a deficit as Batavia notched five unearned runs through its first five innings.
