After Hard-Fought Battle, Lady Vikings' Amazing Season Comes to an End

Geneva's extraordinary girls basketball team loses on Monday night to Zion-Benton in the class 4A Barrington supersectional.

After a season of ups and downs and an exciting post-season run, the Geneva girls basketball season has finally come to an end after a 46-36 loss to Zion-Benton in the class 4A Barrington supersectional on Monday night.

Even though the Vikings managed to keep Zion-Benton well within reach, they could not manage to find a way to pull ahead of the tough Zee-Bees (26-6).  With 47 seconds left, Geneva came as close as it would come after Ashley Santos hit two free-throws to narrow the lead to 40-36, but Zion-Benton came back strong and converted clutch free-throws to pull ahead.

Geneva ended its season with a 25-7 record and 10 consecutive wins coming into the supersectional game.

“We didn’t play our game,” said senior Sammy Scofield after Geneva’s loss.

Indeed, although Geneva did force several turnovers, the Vikings’ shooting was cold the entire game, and they couldn’t find easy ways to score points off of defense, as was their trademark throughout the season.

Ashley Santos led the team with 20 points, and Sammy Scofield followed her with 6points. Kat Yelle was held to 4 points. Kelsey Pease and Brooke Binette each had 2.

For Zion-Benton, Otavia Crump had 14 points, followed by Juanita Robinson and Helena Rodriguez, who each scored ten.

And, although the season has come to an end, Geneva has a lot to be proud of its accomplishments. In the past three seasons, the Lady Vikings basketball program has brought home three regional titles, three sectional titles, and a supersectional title (in 2009). Their record over the past three seasons stands at 90-8.
