The Class of 2014 inductees into the Geneva Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 7 include a late-1960s football and wrestling standout who made a career of teaching and coaching both sports in the western suburbs; a football receiver and track sprinter who went on to football stardom at the University of Illinois and who is now a university professor; and a Viking soccer superstar who became soccer MVP and team captain at the U of I and is now playing soccer professionally when she’s not doing overseas mission work and helping counsel young athletes.

They are, respectively, Jeff Ainsworth ’68, Dr. Jim Klein ’90 and Jackie Santacaterina ’06, and all three have indicated they’ll be present for the 14th annual induction ceremonies, set for Friday evening, Feb. 7, 2014, in the school’s main contest gymnasium, during halftime of the Geneva-vs.-Streamwood boys’ varsity basketball game (set to tip off at 7:15 p.m.).

These days I tell people that Wisconsin does not have a baseball team (they actually don't) and Illinois doen't have a football team (they really don't), but the Illini were once fearsome. http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/football/2004-10-16/catching-jim-klein.html I used to walk the sidelines with Rick Nagel back in the day. This story is not about Jimmy Klein but involved another little Geneva scat back. The Vikes ran a sweep and the half back scored on a nifty 30+ yard scamper. The middle line backer ran over and head butted the kid hard. I went over and asked if he was OK. The kid looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and said: "Youthful overexuberance." That guy is likely also a professor somewhere. Hats off to Jimmy Klein, the immortal Viking walk-on at Illinois who went on to beat the Wolverines when Simeon Rice forced a fumble and Johnny Johnson heaved one into the end zone.
