Western Avenue School Beautification Committee Says Get Up and Grow Aug. 28

Aug. 28 is the event, but Aug. 21 is the signup deadline.

The Western Avenue School Beautification Committee and Get Up and Grow are teaming up for a Planting Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, and they are seeking volunteers.

Using a chunk of a Kane County Fit Kids 2020 grant plus a donation from Wasco Nursery, committee members will be planting an assortment of fruit trees and bushes. A Wasco representative will be on hand to guide volunteers and answer questions.

The Beautification Committee's efforts also include improving on school landscaping. If you have any groundcover, sedum and/or grasses you would like to divide and donate, please contact Kris Chapski at kchapski@comcast.net.

Kids are encouraged to help in all the planting activity, and they will have the chance to paint a section of fence to be used in the garden, as well.

If you have passed Western Avenue School over the summer and wondered what is going on, here's an update:

Right before school let out, the first-graders transplanted the pumpkin/squash seedlings that they and the kindergarten students had planted a few weeks earlier.

Throughout the summer, the Boy Scout dens and Girl Scout Troops affiliated with WAS have been watering and weeding the pumpkin patch.  So far, the patch is growing like crazy and organizers are hoping for a great harvest.

Late in May, Girl Scout Daisy Troop 4868 planted three raised beds with tomatoes, zucchini, basil, carrots, chives, lemon balm and strawberries and have been harvesting the results all summer long.  In late July, we received delivery of 32 pallets of pavers donated by Paveloc and our entry arbor was been built and installed by our own Mr. Zeman.

Please RSVP to Lisa Goewey (lgoewey@hotmail.com) or Jen Kelley (jen.kelley@comcast.net) by Aug. 21, so we can plan the workload as well as provide numbers for our postparty.
