Welcome to the 2011-12 Academic Year and More—5 Things You Should Know for Wednesday, Aug. 24

Some of the boys from TV's General Hospital are coming to Zanies at the Pheasant Run showing off their band, Port Chuck.

Parents across Geneva will breathe a collective sigh today because summer is over and school has started. The first day of school is always a little bittersweet, especially for the kindergarten parents, but everything will be back to standard operating procedure before you know it. 

Also, you can find out how to participate in an important breast cancer walk at an event in Aurora tonight.

Here are five things going on Wednesday, Aug. 24:

1. School for the students of Geneva's Public School District 304 starts today. Geneva parents were delighted to hear the recent news that the . The average composite test score from the class of 2011 at was 24.1, while the state average was 20.9.

2. Help in the fight against breast cancer with the  from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 24 W. New York St., in Aurora. This event will begin the festivities for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Fox Valley Walk on Oct. 16. 

Come out to the Ballydoyle tonight to learn how you can participate in the walk as a volunteer, walk participant or honored survivor. 

3. The Geneva Academic Foundation is having a . Five Below is a great place to find bargain-basement pricing on everyday items including clothing and children's toys; all under $5. They even sell electronic accessories and pet items.

Bring in an event flyer when you shop between Aug. 24 and Sept. 5 and the Geneva Academic Foundation will receive a donation of 10 percent of the purchase price from each sale. Flyers may be downloaded from the GAF website at www.gafgeneva.org.  

4. You can hear a live performance by the band Port Chuck at 5 and 8 p.m. at  in St. Charles. Port Chuck is made up of four cast members from the daytime soap opera General Hospital: Scott Reeves (Dr. Steven Webber), Brandon Barash (Johnny Zacchara), Bradford Anderson (Damian "Spinelli" Spinelli) and Steve Burton (Jason Quatermaine).

5. On Aug. 24, 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly alone from Los Angeles, CA, to Newark, NJ. The completed trip took her 19 hours and five minutes in a Lockheed Vega plane.
