St. Peter Students attend Leadership Day at Holocaust Museum

Eighth-graders learn from survivors.

Three eighth-graders from in Geneva attended a Student Leadership Day at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL, in March. With their teacher Jeanne VanLandeghem, Brenna Barrett, Natalie Blank, and Sam Hendrian gathered with other eighth-graders from 22 Chicago-area schools.

The students met in groups to discuss issues shared by all schools. They toured the museum and were given the opportunity to have lunch with Holocaust survivors.  After lunch, the Holocaust survivors shared their stories. A keynote speaker followed who was a survivor of the war in her country of Bosnia. Students were challenged to come up with an action plan to take back to their respective schools.

The St. Peter students were nominated by their teachers to attend because of their sincere concern for the victims of the Holocaust. After an informative and eye opening day, the students planned to share what they learned with the seventh and eighth grade students at St. Peter School and to encourage their classmates to treat everyone with respect.
