St. Charles East Named Among Most Challenging High Schools in Illinois

St. Charles East High School has been named the 37th most challenging high school in Illinois in recently released rankings from the Washington Post. 

This is a slight drop from last year when the school was ranked at No. 35 on the list, which includes fewer than 10 percent of high schools nationally. In Illinois only 65 high schools of the 682 public high schools and 146 non-public high schools in the state were named to the Washington Post’s list. 

College Prep School of America in Lombard was ranked as the most challenging high school in Illinois. Here is a look at the top ten most challenging high schools, according to the rankings, in Illinois:

8. Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn
   
9. Prospect in Mount Prospect
   
10. Lane Tech in Chicago 
    

The Washington Post list ranks schools through an index formula that uses the following ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June of that year.

In releasing the list, the Washington Post also notes the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence.
