POST GAME: St. Charles East Coach Mike Fields

Penalties and miscues hurt on Friday night, but Saints are learning, improving and ready for a breakout win next week.

Two quick and very easy observations about St. Charles East football.

Observation 1: The Saints are going to improve and win some games this year, as head coach Mike Fields notes in the video here. East has many weapons and a capacity for big plays—as Carter Reading and Charlie Fisher and Jake Mazanke showed Friday night.

, St. Charles outscored the Tribune's 19th-ranked team, 17-14.

As a Geneva fan and friendly neighbor, I hope they win many, many games this year.

Observation No. 2: Head coach Mike Fields is a great guy, a class act and the kind of man I'd want to coach my kids. You can tell a lot about a coach in a post-game interview, especially in an interview after a loss. Fields is about as articulate, gracious and positive as any I've come across in a lot of years of covering high school sports.
