Photo Essay: Walk to School Day—Good for the Heartland
Mayor, school superintendent among the folks trekking to Heartland Elementary Wednesday morning.
Although he had to make a train, Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns was among the kids and parents at 7:40 a.m. at the corner of Husking Peg and Eleanor.
That was one of the six meeting places, where folks congregated to walk to school together, part of at . participated.
International Walk to School Day started in Chicago in 1997 and now is marked in all 50 states. In 2009, people from 40 countries around the world participated. Its mission is to promote good health, spend some time outdoors, make a small counter-attack to child obesity and give parents a chance to get together with their kids.

On the side streets around Heartland, parent's chatted and smiled. Some stood outside their homes to watch the local dignitaries—including Burns, School Superintendent Kent Mutchler and Director of Curriculum Andy Barrett—parade by like pied pipers in a stream of students.
Some walked with mom or dad. Some raced up the sidewalks and or ran down hills, most carrying backpacks, on a perfect fall morning.
