One Wing Of Coultrap Almost Gone

The latest edition in the progress report of Coultrap demolition work is that the latest addition of the former school building is almost gone.

As of Wednesday, June 26, 2013, most of the north side of the building has been taken down.

The circa-1923 structure was a former high school, a former middle school, a former grade school and a former administrative office of School District 304. The oldest part of the school remains intact, and the demolition work appears to be moving from north to south, so that the historic part of the building will be the last to go.

The property is earmarked to be a public open space, along with some monument commemorating the school and its namesake, Harry Coultrap, one of Geneva's most honored educators.

At Monday night's School Board meeting, officials discussed a possible date for commemoration of this building and the re-christening of the Fourth Street administrative facility in Coultrap's name.

Officials gave a preliminary nod to hold a ceremony in August, on the same day as the annual Corn Boil, which heralds the start of the school year and fall sports season.

An announcement would be made at the Corn Boil in addition to ceremonies during the day.
