Neighbors Concerned About Dust, 'Men in Hazmat Suits' at Coultrap
Neighbors living near the former Coultrap school building say they're concerned about recent clouds of dust and men dressed in "hazmat suits" at the demolition site.
Patricia Winter posted a note on the Geneva Patch board Friday, saying
the neighborhood is more than a bit worried about "large clouds of dust that have risen from the building as it is torn down."
"Concern became more when it was noticed that there were persons in plastic suits and caps and masks and using plastic to cover the pile of debris," she said.
The neighborhood's Northwest Geneva Families Facebook page shows photos of the workers in suits.
Martha Paschke, another neighbor, said on Facebook that she talked with a School Board member who explained that workers are wearing the protection because "they are dealing with the older part of the building. This is part of their 'abundance of caution’ protocol," Paschke wrote.
The School Board member told Paschke that air-monitoring stations have been set up to make sure there is no danger to residents.
Still, neighbors remain concerned. "Is there asbestos or lead in the dust? Why the hazmat suits?" Winter said.
