Mill Creek Students Second in Nationwide Quiz Bowl!

Mill Creek students put on their thinking caps and finish second in the nation among fifth-grade teams in America Answers 2012!

Twelve students recently participated in a national Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl competition, and scored second in the nation among fifth grade teams, School District 304 reports.

Mill Creek finished No. 2 out of 205 teams from 33 states that entered the fifth- and sixth-grade America Answers 2012 contest this year, and the top six fifth-grade teams will receive a trophy and ribbons.

Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl is a scholastic, computer team competition consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions in the areas of math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information and fun trivia. Two chances to answer correctly are given, and points are awarded based on how fast a team answers as well as accuracy.

The first-place fifth grade team from Virginia scored 1,329 points while Mill Creek students tallied 1,299 points to come in second place.

Two fourth-graders and two fifth-graders from each classroom were selected by a pretest to become Mill Creek’s team. The students are:

Fifth graders: Peter Mertka, Captain;  Alex Sharp, Keyboard Operator; Amanda Kural; James Stuedemann; Lucas Bice; Hannah Pell

Fourth graders: Kara Warcup; Teagan King; Ryan Klemm; John Voight; Carter Ray; Ally Heine

One item left out of this article is that the Mill Creek team was the only one out of the 205 teams to get 100% of their answers correct! Amazing job! The Virginia school got more points by answering the questions they got correct faster.
