GMS South Participates in Clean Sweep Mondays

This just seems like a really good idea. Next one is Oct. 3.

In my experience, Geneva schools very often just "get it" and get it right.

As a parent of former middle school students, here's something Geneva Middle School South (and probably other schools) are doing that just makes a lot of sense, to me anyway.

CLEAN SWEEP MONDAYS

One of the most difficult aspects of the middle school experience for both parents and students is transitioning away from parent provided organizational support to a student becoming more independent.

At the elementary level parents provides a high level of support to the students when it comes to organizing their materials and information. By the time students reach the high school level they are expected to be fully responsible for managing their academic career.

During this time of transition in middle school, students will often have difficulty keeping their lockers organized and papers in their proper locations in their binders/trappers. This year at South we are going to help students become more organized in a number of different ways. One big way is through the implementation of Clean Sweep Mondays.

On Clean Sweep Mondays, students will be allowed in the building at 8:10 a.m. to spend a little extra time cleaning their lockers and organizing their binders. There will be staff members responsible for checking on the student’s progress during the clean sweep time and students will be responsible for reporting to staff when they have completed a checklist of tasks.  The task sheet the students will complete is on the back of this page and gives you an idea of our expectations.

As a parent there are a few things you can do to assist us to help make Clean Sweep Mondays successful:

  1. Mark your calendar with the dates listed below and remind your students that morning that this is a great opportunity to get organized and clean out their locker.
  2. One of the things we want students to do is empty their binders/trappers of papers they will no longer need after a unit of study is over.  Please be sure your student has a “take home” folder or some other way they plan to designate things that should go home and stay home when they are cleaning their binders/trappers.  Remember to look for that folder when it comes home.
  3. If your student rides the bus to school we expect they will have enough time to do clean sweep.  If you drive your student to school please drop them off at least 10 minutes earlier than normal to allow them to utilize this opportunity.

The clean sweep dates are listed below.
