GMS North Goes Digitial; No More Progress Reports in Print

With Home Access, parents can get progress reports all the time. So GMS North is saving some trees and asking parents to go online.

In a recent letter to parents, Geneva Middle School North Principal Larry Bidlack explained why GMS North is eliminating the practice of printing and sending home hard copies of progress reports, starting with the fourth quarter of this year.

Bidlack said the online Home Access Center has helped GMS North improve communication between school and home about student progress.  Teachers routinely update students' grades every Monday, so that parents can monitor their children’s progress throughout the school year.

Students can monitor their own progress, as well.

"With the considerable access to student progress electronically, the practice of sending home paper copies of progress reports is no longer necessary," Bidlack said. "In addition, going paperless is a more eco-friendly and cost-effective way of viewing the same information."

GMS North will continue to notify parents and guardians of the mid-quarter dates as a reminder to check Home Access Center for their child’s grades.  These reminders will be sent via an e-blast—304 North Connects—and as a post on the GMS North website's events calendar.

Next year, the mid-quarter dates will be included in the Student Planners.

If parents don't have access to the Internet, they can make arrangements to receive a printed report. And of course, students will continue to send home report cards each quarter.

"We are thankful for the advances in technology that have allowed for increased communication between school and home," Bidlack said. "I hope you and your child will continue using Home Access and Student Access Centers to monitor student progress."
