GHS Students Make Us Proud

"Proud to be a GHS parent," was the Facebook post. And parents wrote in with the reasons why.

“Proud to be a GHS parent,” Mary Stith—one of the biggest cheerleaders for Geneva kids around—wrote on Facebook the other day.

She ticked off some recent achievements of Geneva High School students: recognition of National Merit students, WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team, Math Team and athletes signing for colleges. Other examples: “students who ran a great dance despite controversy, (referring to the boycott of some students to the “grinding-free” blacklight dance held last weekend), SADD club members, music and art students.”

Add to the list, she urged.

People did: the students working on the school’s literary magazine, and those rehearsing for the spring musical, Secret Garden. (That is set for March 17-19, by the way.) The varsity dance team heading to state competition March 5.

“GHS offers classes and clubs for every interest,” another parent noted. “Every student can be involved in something from Model UN to ... the arts.

A quick look at the website found a few more reasons to celebrate: the kids who tutor others, the television studio students heading in March to the Student Television Network conference. The students who are part of Operation Snowball. Young writers participating in Poetry Slam and the newspaper, or the students on Speech Team who compete in dramatic and formal speaking events on Saturdays from November through February. Viking Pals, who mentor special-needs students. Those working to make our planet a better place in the Environmental Club, and the Geneva Ambassadors who are just that, ambassadors for the school.
