GHS Celebrates February Students of the Month from the Junior Class

GHS names its Students of the Month for February. An award is earned by a student who stands apart, succeeds despite circumstances, or contributes in some special way to the school. Here are the juniors; seniors next!

Geneva High School celebrates education and student achievement by nominating students of the month. The following are some of Geneva's achievers; these from the junior class. We published the students of the month from the freshman and sophomore classes earlier today; senior class nominees are up next!

Ana Martinez, Grade 11
Nominated by Mr. Wicinski

Ana Martinez is my student-of-the-month nomination. She does an excellent job in class with homework, test taking, classroom etiquette—all those things that we as teachers expect out of our students, Ana does. But to nominate anyone for doing what is expected of them would be a disservice to the award. This is not why Ana is here. She is being nominated for going above and beyond the classroom expectations. Ana has a unique ability; she is bilingual. When a young man was dropped into my science course with virtually zero English skills, Ana volunteered to explain, work with, and tutor him. She has shown unbelievable patience, adaptability and creativity in her teachings—more than most at her young age.  She is a natural. The young man is doing great and is progressing, while Ana continues to excel. Ana is confident, quick with a smile and has skills that are well beyond her years. Whatever path she chooses to take, these skills are going to make her very successful. Ana, I just want to say, "Gracias."

Katarina Meister, Grade 11
Nominated by Ms. Petmezas

I chose Katarina Meister for my student of the month for many reasons. Katarina is one of those students every teacher wishes they had in class; and I have the added pleasure of coaching her in track, as well. Katarina is one of the happiest, most positive girls I know. She shows up to class every day ready to not only learn but to also have fun. Unlike most students, Katarina tries in P.E. every day. Whether we are learning dances or working hard on fitness weeks, Katarina gives 100 percent effort every time with a smile on her face. I’m absolutely thrilled at the fact that Katarina is only a junior, because this means Geneva High School has the pleasure of having her for one more year.
