Geneva Schools Teach ABC's of Vegetables

Geneva's elementary school kids try different fruits and vegetables this week at the A to Z Salad Bar.

Geneva elementary school students will be greeted with fruits and vegetables for every letter of the alphabet this week as part of an educational program sponsored by Sodexo, the district's foodservice provider.

"It's always a challenge to broaden the student's repertoire (of food)," Principal Dr. Julie Dye said.

Five food items will be offered each day this week (six one day) to provide information on healthy eating. For one day at each of the six elementary schools, Sodexo will feature a Tasting Table with more-unusual items and samples for students to try.

Williamsburg Elementary students started the week with apricots, blueberries, cole slaw, dill pickles, and edible mushrooms. They also got to sample jicama—a tan vegetable from Mexico and South America—and kiwi, the small, brown fuzzy fruit grown in Italy, New Zealand, Brazil and Chile.
