Geneva Library Foundation Speaker Series Announces:
Hoopla in July: Did the LHC find the Higgs boson?

Fireworks are normal for the Fourth of July, but this year’s pyrotechnics were of a scientific nature, rather than merely an incendiary one. Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider announced their evidence resulting from their search
for the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is the one piece predicted by the current theory that has not yet been discovered and scientists have been looking for it for nearly 50 years.
Fermilab scientist and Geneva resident, Dr. Don Lincoln is a member of one of the two teams involved in that exciting announcement. In his talk, he will describe what was found, what wasn’t and will tell us what sort of new results the future may bring.
Join us for this exciting kick-off to the Geneva Library Foundation’s new 2012-2013 Speaker Series. The series will host a variety of different speakers, all of which will be topics of interest to the Geneva community.
The evening will include a short reception, introduction of the Geneva Library Foundation, the presentation of the speaker, and a question and answers session. Refreshments will be served. This is a free event. Reservations are not required.
Don Lincoln received his Ph.D. in experimental particle physics from Rice University and he is now a senior physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He splits his research time studying data from the Fermilab
Tevatron and from the CERN Large Hadron Collider located outside Geneva, Switzerland.
He has authored two books for the public about particle physics, The Quantum Frontier: The Large Hadron
Collider (2009) and Understanding the Universe: From Quarks to the Cosmos (2003, 2012). He has published many magazine articles in periodicals that include Analog: Science Fiction and Fact, The Physics Teacher and Scientific American. Dr. Lincoln is available for pre-presentation interviews.
