District 304 Honors Athletes, Business Champs

Tradition of Excellence awards go to top-ranked dancers, gymnasts, DECA club members—and a swimmer!

Twenty students Monday joined more than 2,000 present and former students who’ve received the district’s Tradition of Excellence Award.

 “I think it’s wonderful that we have had so many outstanding students in District 304,” said Superintendent Kent Mutchler.

 The varsity dance team came home state champions in lyrical dance from the Team Dance Illinois competition held last weekend in Peoria. The team also took third place in the open dance category.

Team members include Taylor Barnett, Amada Brognia, Jacqueline Cale, Katherine Condon, Amanda Cushnie, Aimee Dappas, Alexandra Freeland, Courtney Kein, Kerry Kennath, Melinda Lietza, Kelsey Paeth, Kathryn Reis, Lauren Serra, Jennifer Ugaste and Hailey Wishne. They are coached by Amanda Cornwell and Jamie Abts.

won the state championship in the Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, while Michael Krueger placed in the top 10 in the Principles of Marketing at last weekend’s DECA state competition in Decatur. Eric Hatczel is the GHS DECA adviser.

Joseph Hollman represented Geneva High School at the Illinois High School Association state boys’ swim meet Feb. 25 at New Trier High School, placing 29th in the 200-meter freestyle. Hollman trains with the St. Charles Tsunami private swim team, affiliated with Illinois Swimming Inc.; GHS coach Mary Keyzer accompanied him to the sectional and state meets.

 Gymnasts competed in floor exercise at the IHSA state meet Feb. 22 at Palatine High School. Puff placed 21st, while Ott placed 27th. They are coached by Kim Hostman and assistant coach Susie Logsdon.
