Coultrap's Historic Side About To Come Down

A little piece of Geneva history is fading this week, like dust from a demolition site.

Neighbors of the Coultrap building continue to express concern about what might be in the dust that has accompanied the demolition effort of the south side if the building, which dates back to 1923.

Patricia Winters, a neighbor, said she talked to school administrators but didn't like the answers she's getting regarding health-safety issues.

"I then asked if you find asbestos or lead with the air monitors will you tell us? She said that they are following the IEPA requirements," she said on a boards post on Geneva Patch. "I do not feel satisfied at all. They are not protecting the neighbors who are directly in the path of the clouds of dust!"

The Coultrap School was first Geneva's High school, then its middle school, then a grade school and finally an administrative building.

The opportunity to see that last part of the building is dwindling. Officials hope to have the building razed and a historic marker in place for a commemoration ceremony on the same day as the corn boil in August, which heralds the start of the school year and the fall sports season.
