Coultrap Will Come Down June 3

The demolition of the 1929 Coultrap building will take place sometime on June 3, officials say.

Geneva School Board President Mark Grosso mentioned in passing Tuesday night that the Coultrap building would be demolished on June 3.

Previous mentions were that the building would be demolished sometime in July so that work could be completed prior to the start of the 2013-14 school year, but fencing already has gone up around the building and preparations put in place for the demolition.

School District 304 Director of Facility Operations Scott Ney said after the meeting that the timing of the building demolition would be named later and that the "wrecking ball" image is a little out of date.

"There's not a wrecking ball. There's actually a claw that will be demolishing that building," he said. "I don't know an exact time. We'll be having our meeting tomorrow, and we'll be issuing something after that."

School District 304 will pay Alpine Demolition $545,900 to do the work and another $140,200 for asbestos abatement at the school.

The board also determined that it would rename—or "rededicate" the Fourth Street central office as the "Coultrap Educational Services Center" in memory of Harry Coultrap, the educator that played such an important role in the development of Geneva schools and its "tradition of excellence."

Holian Industries submitted the low big for the aesbestos removal.
